Washing Tips for T-Shirts, Hoodies, and Hats
Step 1: Turn everything inside out
Before water touches your merch, flip it. This protects the screen-printed graphics from friction against other clothes. I've seen prints crack after just three washes when left right-side out. For hoodies with front pockets, turn them inside out too to prevent pilling on the fleece.
Step 2: Use cold water only
Hot water is the number one enemy. It breaks down cotton fibers and loosens screen-printing adhesive. Stick to water below 85°F - that's the cold setting on most machines. The Riley Green Heavyweight Hoodie's double-stitched seams are tough, but even they weaken under hot water.
Step 3: Choose a gentle cycle and mild detergent
A normal cycle's agitation is too rough. Use the delicate or gentle setting with reduced spin speed. For detergent, avoid anything with bleach or optical brighteners. Woolite Dark or a free-and-clear option work best. Powder detergents can leave residue on dark fabrics, so liquid is safer.
Step 4: Handle hats separately
Trucker hats need special treatment. Never toss them in with heavy jeans. Put the hat in a mesh lingerie bag and wash on delicate with similar light items. If the bill is cardboard, hand wash only by spot cleaning with a damp cloth. The Riley Green Vintage Wash Trucker Hat has a structured front that holds shape best with gentle handling.
Common mistake: Using too much detergent. Excess soap traps dirt and causes graying over time. Use half the recommended amount for a small load.
